driver's license Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and
provides comprehensive nursing care. Responsibilities include
executing orders from licensed independent providers, dispensing
and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and
treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory
techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of
inmates or residents. All technical and clinical procedures must be
performed within the scope of education and licensure. The RN
attends sick call to see inmates or residents, prepares a list for
examination, and prepares the examining room and equipment. Pill
call operations, medication dispensing, and documentation must be
conducted per policies and procedures. The RN is responsible for
contacting licensed independent providers for medication and
treatment orders, and for emergencies. Examinations and assessments
of new inmates or residents with illnesses or injuries are
conducted to refer them to appropriate healthcare facilities when
necessary. Emergency procedures must be performed as needed,
notifying licensed independent providers for treatment orders. The
RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided
by contract personnel while ensuring their needs are met. The RN
monitors inmate or resident inpatient hospitalizations for early
releases whenever appropriate. Guidance and supervision are
provided to nursing care delivered by licensed vocational or
practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. The RN
maintains a cooperative relationship with facility staff, nursing
staff, contract providers, and outside agencies. Established
corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are
utilized in decision-making while exercising sound independent
judgment. Regular evaluations of medical service provision are
conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
The RN maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all
medical records. Assistance is provided in reviewing medical files
to ensure all services are documented. Monitoring of potential
catastrophic illnesses is conducted closely. Compliance with all
applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled
substances, is expected. The RN observes and records inmate or
resident behavior. Inspection of the medical unit for potential
contraband items must occur, with secure storage or disposal of
supplies and equipment. Health counseling and education on an
individual or group basis may be required. Assistance is provided
in preparing and maintaining various standard narrative,
statistical, summary, and operational records and reports using
appropriate grammar. The RN is responsible for processing all
reports and documents in a timely manner. Reading, analyzing,
comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures,
governmental regulations, and legal documents is necessary.
Processing and responding to lawsuits is required, attending court
hearings when necessary. Facilitation of accreditation by providing
the required level of efficiency and appropriate medical services
is needed. The RN prepares and disseminates safety and accident
reports as required, taking appropriate action during serious
